English Premiership table-toppers Bristol Bears final league game on Saturday has been cancelled due to several London Irish players testing positive for coronavirus. Bristol have already assured themselves of a home semi-final in the play-offs. The winner between champions Exeter and Sale later on Saturday will be the other hosts in the play-offs. Harlequins make up the play-off quartet. "Premiership Rugby can confirm that London Irish's Premiership Rugby match against Bristol Bears -- scheduled for today (Saturday) -- has been called off," read a Premiership statement. "London Irish returned positive Covid-19 tests this week and a significant number of their playing squad were ruled out of the match through the contact tracing process. "This meant London Irish were unable to fulfil the fixture at Ashton Gate, something that was only confirmed this morning (Saturday)." A results panel will decide the allocation of points but going by previous cases Bristol will be allocated four points and London Irish, being the club who caused the game to be called-off, receive two. The cancellation effectively ends London Irish's slim hopes of finishing in the top eight and earning a Champions Cup place for next season. They are ninth a point adrift of Bath and two off seventh-placed Wasps. It is the second Premiership match in the final round to be cancelled. Bottom side Worcester's home game with Gloucester was called off earlier in the week due to Covid cases in the latter's camp. pi/dmc
