A fire at an industrial site along the route of the Gent-Wevelgem cycling classic saw organisers scramble to reroute the 247.5 km race, which will still finish in Wevelgem. The cobbled classic started in Ypres and runs through the flat Flanders plains before taking in 11 small hills ahead of the finale. "Due to a fire... in Menen, the passage through the city centre of Menen is suspended and the last 5km of the race are being replaced by an alternative route. This (is) for both the men's and women's race. The finish in Wevelgem remains unchanged," organisers said. The new route is 1.1km longer. bur/dmc/jc
