AFP's fact-check service debunks misinformation spread online. Here are some of our recent articles on inaccurate claims in the United States: Facebook posts claim Amish religious communities have not been affected by the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. But the administrator of a Pennsylvania medical center that mainly treats Amish patients said they have experienced higher than average Covid-19 infection rates, US health authorities documented cases in Amish communities in Ohio, and first-hand accounts describe the impact of the disease on the Christian Anabaptist group. Social media posts claim that US gas prices are at their highest since Barack Obama's administration, blaming President Joe Biden for the uptick. This is misleading; while prices at the pump have risen since January 2021, experts attribute this to a gradual recovery from very low crude oil costs during the downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which are now headed upward because of an anticipated rebound in demand. An image of a purported CNN news story shared on social media claims that President Joe Biden's administration has lowered the US age of consent to eight. The claim is false; age of consent laws do not fall under presidential jurisdiction, and the screenshot of the article is doctored from an unrelated CNN story. 1. u.afp.com/UTuA 2. u.afp.com/UTQW 3. u.afp.com/UTQd afp
