The San Diego Padres bolstered their pitching staff by acquiring righthander Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians in a multi-player Major League Baseball trade on Monday. The Padres, who are aiming for their first postseason appearance in four years, received Clevinger, outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named from Cleveland for a package of young players, including catcher Austin Hedges, outfielder Josh Naylor and pitcher Cal Quantrill. "I think this is a team that can make a serious, serious run. I don't think there will be many teams that will get in the way of what we've got right now," said Clevinger. Clevinger plans to be in a San Diego uniform on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels. This is the fifth Padres' trade in the last three days and it comes on the day of MLB's trading deadline. The 29-year-old Clevinger joins a strong Padres starting pitching rotation that also includes Chris Paddack and Dinelson Lamet. Clevinger had fallen out of favour with the Indians after he and teammate Zach Plesac violated COVID-19 protocols by going out with friends in Chicago on August 8. In 101 appearances over four seasons with Cleveland, Clevinger has a 42-22 won-loss record and a 3.20 earned run average (ERA). He has a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA in four starts this season. In other deals on Monday, the Miami Marlins acquired outfielder Starling Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks, in exchange for pitchers Caleb Smith and Humberto Mejia and a player to be named later. Marte spent eight years with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being traded to Arizona in January. gph/rcw
