Colombia's air force killed four ELN guerrillas on Thursday in a bombardment of rebel positions in the north, Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo announced. Among those killed was the leader of a rebel group known as Mocho Tierra and "three other terrorists," the minister told reporters in Bogota. The four ELN (National Liberation Army) rebels were in a camp in the Montecristo area in Bolivar when they were targeted by an army bombardment, he said. Mocho Tierra "was considered a high value target and was linked to the planning and execution of terrorist actions against the civilian population and the public force in the departments of Antioquia and Bolivar," Trujillo said. He said Mocho Tierra was linked to drug trafficking and illegal mining that brought in around one million dollars a month for the ELN, the minister said. The ELN is Colombia's last active guerrilla movement. Comprising around 2,000 members, it is said to operate in about 10 percent of Colombia but is a smaller player than the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which reached a landmark peace agreement with the government in 2016. Colombian President Ivan Duque broke off talks with the ELN after a January car bomb attack on a Bogota police academy killed 21 recruits. dl/db/mdl
