Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is "recovering very well" from the coronavirus, his interior minister said Tuesday. Lopez Obrador continues to perform his duties from the National Palace, said Olga Sanchez, who is standing in for the 67-year-old at his daily news conference this week. "He has been in confinement. He is strong and recovering very well," said Sanchez. She told reporters that details of the leader's health were being kept confidential, calling it "sensitive" information given his status as head of state. The left-wing populist, who has a history of heart problems and hypertension, announced Sunday that he was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 but said his symptoms were mild. Lopez Obrador was accused of downplaying the risks of the virus early in the pandemic and for being slow to impose a lockdown. He has refused to wear a mask except on rare occasions, such as when he visited then US president Donald Trump in Washington last July. Mexico has officially registered around 1.77 million coronavirus cases and more than 150,000 deaths -- the world's fourth-highest fatality toll after the United States, Brazil and India. nc-dr/dw
