Veteran NHL goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said Thursday he will miss the upcoming NHL season as he seeks treatment for a heart condition. The 39-year-old NHL veteran -- who helped Sweden to Olympic ice hockey gold in 2006 -- revealed the news in a video posted on social media just 10 weeks after he inked a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals for the 2020-21 season. "Today is a pretty tough and emotional day for me," Sweden's Lundqvist said. "For several weeks now, I've been undergoing different types of tests related to a heart condition. And after lots of discussions with doctors around the country and finally receiving the last results earlier this week, I unfortunately won't be able to join the team this year. And I will need to continue the process to address and fix these issues." The Capitals issued a statement backing Lundqvist's decision. Before signing with the Caps, Lundqvist spent 15 seasons with the New York Rangers, where he established himself as an NHL star. He went 459-310-96 WITH A 2.43 goals against average in 887 games for New York. He is sixth in NHL history for wins, seventh in saves and eighth in games played, which included 871 starts. Lundqvist made no mention of "retirement" in his video message, speaking more of his disappointment at having to abandon his plans for the upcoming campaign. "I can say for the past two months I felt so inspired and committed to prepare myself for this upcoming season," Lundqvist said. "The daily skates and workouts and just the thought of playing in D.C. has really brought me lots of excitement. "It's still very hard for me to process all of this, and kind of shocking to be honest. But with the experts involved, I know this is the only way of action." bb/rcw
