Italy's Federica Brignone won Sunday's super-G in Sochi to climb top of the discipline standings with American star Mikaela Shiffrin sidestepping this leg of the World Cup. Brignone's compatriot Sofia Goggia was second on the Rosa Khutor mountain which staged the alpine skiing events at the 2014 Winter Games with Joana Haehlen of Switzerland in third. "It's (super-G) my favourite, the one I prefer the one where I have most fun, so I'm really proud," said Brignone. It is the first time in her career that she has led in a World Cup event and she has 216pts in the race for the individual title with Corinne Suter on 200 and Shiffrin on 186. "Super-G is amazing," she beamed. "Today I wanted it so bad." "I never missed a training day all summer and there's lots of girls in the Italian team skiing really fast." In cold and overcast conditions with poor visibility Brignone swooped through the 39 gates in gung-ho fashion to cover the 1.916km course in 1min 25.33sec. This was 29-year-old Brignone's 14th World Cup win, her fourth this season and her third in the discipline. Brignone emulated her mother last weekend by winning a World Cup Alpine skiing race in Sestriere, Italy, albeit sharing the top spot with Petra Vlhova. Sunday's super-G went ahead after heavy snowfall forced the cancellation of Saturday's scheduled downhill at the Rosa Khutor ski station. A specialist in the technical events World Cup leader Shiffrin is on course for a fourth successive overall World Cup title but skipped the Sochi speed events to "rest and get a solid training block in." In the overall standings for the World Cup title Shiffrin has 1225pts ahead of Brignone on 955, while Vlhova is third in 830. bur/dep/smr/dmc/nt
