A Greek prosecutor in a recent case that saw leading members of far-right party Golden Dawn jailed has applied for their sentences to be extended, a judicial source said Friday. Deputy prosecutor Stelios Kostarelos argued that party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and six other chiefs should receive the maximum sentence of 15 years in jail following their conviction for running a criminal organisation. Earlier this month, an Athens court had sentenced them to between 10 and 13 years. Kostarelos argued that the seven leaders "had full control over all the criminal acts" perpetrated by Golden Dawn members, which included murders and violence against migrants and people with left-wing views. Lead prosecutor Adamantia Economou had requested the group be acquitted, saying there was not enough evidence to convict them of running a criminal organisation. But in a landmark ruling for Greek politics, the court on October 7 convicted the Golden Dawn leaders after a five-and-a-half-year trial. In addition to the party's top brass, dozens of other members received prison sentences as well. Most were imprisoned on October 22, apart from party number two Christos Papas who is on the run and European Parliament member Yannis Lagos, still covered by parliamentary immunity. str-hec/tgb/wai
