Latvia's parliament has decided to allow fans to attend the World Ice Hockey Championship starting on Tuesday if they can prove they have been fully vaccinated or had Covid-19 previously. The decision overrules the previous directive from the health ministry which banned spectators from the games altogether. "Fans will be required to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or have survived the infection previously," Edgars Buncis, executive director of championship's organisation committee, told reporters on Monday. Only a fraction of venue capacity will be made available to the public -- a maximum of 2,660 tickets for games held in Arena Riga and 1,058 people at the nearby Olympic Sports Centre. Given the limited number of seats, the minimum price is set at 110 euros ($135) for regular games going up to 340 euros for the final. "The income will go to the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) which has to recoup money spent to organise the championship in these coronavirus circumstances," said Aigars Kalvitis, chairman of the Latvian Hockey Federation. Just five countries are currently on Latvia's green list of countries whose residents are allowed to enter the Baltic state without going into 10-day self-isolation. Of the five, only Britain and Finland have teams competing in the championship. il/dt/lp
