AFP's fact-check service debunks misinformation spread online. Here are some of our recent articles about inaccurate claims in the United States: Articles and social media posts -- one of which received more than 100,000 likes on Facebook -- claim that Black Lives Matter tweeted support for Hamas, the Islamist rulers of Gaza, who are designated as a terrorist group by the United States. The claim is false; BLM expressed solidarity with Palestinians but made no mention of supporting Hamas, and analysts said conflating the two is a deliberate distortion. An article claims that US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows Covid-19 shots have killed more people than all other vaccines in the last 20 years combined. This is false; the data does not show the "death toll" from the vaccines as the article claims, and instead includes reported fatalities that occurred after inoculation, regardless of the cause. Social media posts claim President Joe Biden's administration is resuming construction of Donald Trump's border wall. The US government, in fact, is repairing the Rio Grande Valley flood levee because past border barrier work caused significant damage. Officials have repeatedly said the latest work in Texas is not a continuation of the wall project. Facebook posts appear to show President Joe Biden groping a young Jen Psaki, and conclude this is how she won favor and secured her position as White House press secretary. But the photo used in the posts was manipulated -- the original is of someone else -- and Psaki has years of experience in political communications, notably in the Obama administration. 1. 2. 3. 4. afp
