Pete Buttigieg seized a shock lead Tuesday in Iowa's debut US presidential nomination vote, according to partial Democratic Party results that placed Bernie Sanders second and national frontrunner Joe Biden a distant fourth. With 62 percent of precincts reporting, Buttigieg, the 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, led with 26.9 percent followed by the progressives Sanders, on 25.1 percent, and Elizabeth Warren at 18.3 percent, and Buttigieg's fellow moderate Biden on 15.6 percent. The results were posted some 21 hours after Iowans gathered to hold their caucus that kickstarts the race to see who faces US President Donald Trump in the November elections. cl-mlm/ec
