Small numbers of fans are set to be allowed back into Australian rugby league stadiums from next week, officials said Friday, as restrictions to cope with the coronavirus pandemic ease. The hugely popular National Rugby League resumed its season on May 28 behind closed doors to canned cheers and cardboard spectators after a lengthy COVID-19 enforced break. But the Australian Rugby League Commission has been pushing hard for limited fans to be admitted in New South Wales after the state government relaxed virus restrictions to allow up to 50 people into pubs and restaurants. ARL chairman Peter V'landys argued that this should also be applied to catering areas within corporate boxes at sports stadiums, so long as those attending abide by appropriate social distancing rules. "We're very pleased the government have corrected the anomaly, because this was allowed in pubs, clubs and racecourses but not sports stadiums," he told reporters. The first batches of fans are expected to be at games starting June 11, with details on exactly how many will be permitted still being thrashed out. V'landys is targeting July 1 to have larger crowds back cheering their teams. Australia has seen a steady drop in the number of COVID-19 cases, although social distancing rules remain in force and mass gatherings are not currently permitted. mp/al/qan
