David Quinn was fired as coach of the NHL's New York Rangers on Wednesday along with three assistant coaches, completing a housecleaning a week after two top executives got the axe. Quinn's exit came four days after the Rangers completed the 2021 campaign at 27-23 with six overtime losses, the most wins of any team to miss the NHL playoffs. The Rangers missed the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. Chris Drury, a former Rangers player who was working as associate general manager, was promoted to the Rangers president and general manager on May 5 when John Davidson and Jeff Gorton were fired from those jobs by owner James Dolan. A day earlier, the Rangers released a scathing statement ripping NHL head of player safety George Parros for not imposing more than a fine to Washington's Tom Wilson for a hit on Rangers star Artemi Panarin. The NHL later fined the club $250,000 for the statement. Joining Quinn in making their exits were assistant coaches David Oliver, Jacques Martin and Greg Brown. "I wish each of them the best in their future endeavors," Drury said. "We will begin our search for a new head coach immediately." Quinn took over as coach of the Rangers in May 2018 and over three seasons went 96-87-25. js/rcw
