@engineers_feed Nasa developed a Space pen made from tungsten carbide and thixotropic visco-elastic ink in a hermetically sealed and pressurized reservoir. The ink is forced out by compressed nitrogen at a pressure of nearly 45 psi. The Russians used a pencil.

This endearing tale floats around the internet, but alas is not true. Both US and Russian astronauts used pencils until a private company, Fisher, invested their own money to develop a pen that would work in space. Both US and Russian space agencies then purchased the pens.
