$163 billion — that’s how much the top one percent evades in taxes they owe each year. It’s unacceptable. We’re going to change that with my Build Back Better Agenda, and use that money to invest in the middle class.

This tweet makes the claim that the top 1% owes more than what they are currently paying in taxes. The reality is that under the current US tax laws many of these 1% actually owe very little and are paying what they owe.

Some academics argue the tax gap to be that large, but the Treasury Department estimates proposals to close the tax gap would raise only $700 billion over a decade. Additionally, the CBO found that raising enforcement at the IRS would only raise $200 billion over a decade.
