Sen. Padilla: "In a majority of states, new voters are able to obtain a rifle quicker than they're able to cast their first ballot. It seems to me we have our priorities entirely backwards when it comes to this — when we make it easier to buy a gun than we do to cast a ballot."
Review:
When purchasing a firearm, you must have identification, fill out a 4473 form, which is then entered into the FBI NICS system to run your background check. It can potentially take days to complete the background verification process to legally obtain possession of a firearm.
Review:
Federal law requires gun purchasers to undergo a background check when purchasing a firearm from a dealer along with a current, government issued photo ID. No states require a background check to vote and many don't require ID. Therefore, it's easier to vote than buy a gun.
Review:
Senator Padilla does not back up this assertion, and is using voting requirements from some states and firearm purchasing laws from others. A overwhelming majority of states do not require ID and a background check every time a person votes.
Review:
There are a multitude of laws covering gun purchases including waiting periods, background checks and the like. Voting in CA has automatic voter registration for all adults as well as same day registration on Election Day and generous absentee/vote by mail.
